Our Local Organic CSA

I’ve been making some changes at home to try to eat more healthy while at the same time reducing our food budget. I’ve been baking some things I would have bought before like muffins and bread. I also bought a slow cooker. So far I’ve just cooked a whole chicken in it, but it is ridiculously easy and tastes delicious.
I also signed up for six biweekly deliveries of organic fruits and vegetables through our local CSA. I know I’m lucky that my boys will eat almost anything and it’s cute to see how excited they get when the box arrives. Last night we made freshly squeezed orange juice and enjoyed the pomegranate and those little sweet and crispy orange peppers you see in the photo.
At the Local Harvest website you can look for CSA farms across the USA. Here’s a directory of CSAs in Ontario.

Organic is healthier, but reducing a budget? Not really…quality organic produce around here (Northern CA) is very expensive.
I didn’t mean to imply that eating organic will reduce our food budget! I do find generally that organic produce is more pricey than conventional, but sometimes I’m surprised when I see they are the same price for certain items. I’m hoping that getting the organic food box through my CSA will actually cost less than it would if I were to buy the same stuff at the grocery store. I don’t really know, but I do like the idea of supporting a local venture. In terms of reducing our food budget, I’ve mean choosing to buy a natural grain-fed (not organic) chicken from a local farm for $15 that I can stretch into 4 meals (think soups, stir fry dinners) instead of an $11 box of frozen fish for one meal. Or, baking a dozen muffins from scratch for the price of maybe 2 store-bought ones.
Love it. Did the CSA thing until I got pregnant and could not put anything healthy in my mouth for the life of me. I will be resuming once the baby is here and my regular eating habits have returned.
