Color inspiration

This Saturday I’ll be making the hour long drive to my letterpress printer’s shop to oversee the printing of my new Sweetbeets letterpress print. I’m very excited!

I will reveal all next week, but for now I’ll tell you it’s a counting poster. My youngest son is really into counting these days and he takes every opportunity to count things. So, he double (and triple) checked to make sure I got it all right before I sent off the artwork to have the film made for the custom printing plates.

Now, I’m trying to decide on colors. I can pick two color combinations, but one of the inks has to be the same (for example, orange and blue, orange and green). I’m thinking of one colorway more for boys, one more for girls or gender neutral. I’m going to try to sweet talk my printer into doing another color too!

To help me decide, I looked through the kids’ and nursery room tours at Ohdeedoh and picked out my favorites (see below). I was surprised to see aqua/light blue used in so many rooms, even for girls. That, combined with me not picking any really girly rooms, has me thinking that maybe I shouldn’t go with pink or plum…

…On the other hand, the cheerful tangerine and plum combination is really appealing to me. Also on Saturday we’ll be printing a custom baby announcement that will feature these inks. Now I’m seeing this colorway around while browsing online such as in these fabric storage buckets by How About Orange.

By now, I’ve spent far too long looking at color swatches. I think I’ll sleep on it and hopefully it will become clearer by Saturday!

  1. I have been noticing and loving the use of aqua lately as well. My choices (if it would help) are #1-the orange & plum for girls, which I love! and #2 the orange and aqua for boys/gender neutral. Good luck!

  2. Thanks so much Jackie - I really appreciate your feedback!

  3. I’m for #2 and #5. I think those combos could go in so many rooms. Kind seems like the trend is getting away from really super girly w/ everything pink and more towards just really great bold color combos. Logan’s room has navy & light yellow walls with all different colors of the rainbow as accents.

  4. oh…and #4 would be my other choice if you wanted to have a more girl/boy distinction. I prefer the pink over the plum.

  5. How’s this for not that helpful, but I like the green in 6 (very much!!!!!) and think it would look great with the aqua or 2 and 5. Maybe paired with the orange.

Can’t wait to see your new print.
    You ROCK,
    Tracey

  6. I love orange and aqua! They fit together, I think.. but don’t get this as a professional suggestion, I am not too good at decorating room myself.

Anyway nice to know this blog! It’s lovely!

  7. It’s so great to get all your input!! Thanks so much. I think I’m going to test the different colors by editing the illustration on my computer so I can better visualize what they might look like.

  8. Lisa - are you going to share those with us? That would be fun to see!

  9. Katie - this day has gone by so fast I haven’t even had time to edit the design yet using different colors. I think it will have to be a surprise!

  10. I like #3 and #5. Whichever you choose Lisa, it will work Looking forward to seeing the new poster!
